OVERVIEW:  The Mk 24 Tigerfish Mod 2 is a heavyweight Royal Navy submarine-launched torpedo introduced in 1987, designed for dual anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare. It features wire guidance, active/passive sonar homing, and improved reliability over its predecessors.

DETAILS:  “Mark 24” indicates its sequence in the RN’s 21‑inch torpedo series, and “Mod 2” refers to the Marconi Consolidation upgrade. It measures 6.5 m in length, 533 mm in diameter, weighs approximately 1 550 kg, and carries a Torpex warhead weighing around 340 kg. Powered by silver‑zinc chloride-oxide batteries driving an electric motor, it achieves speeds up to 35 kn with ranges of ~39 km at low speed and ~13 km at high speed. Guidance is via wire during approach, switching to active/passive sonar homing for terminal attack. The Mod 2 variant significantly improved reliability (~80%) following the Mod 1 issues and entered service as part of the Consolidation Programme, retrofitting about 600 existing units.

TYPE: Heavyweight submarine-launched wire-guided dual-purpose acoustic homing torpedo

FUNCTION:  Launched from 533 mm submarine tubes, it runs under wire guidance at low speed to approach targets, then switches to higher-speed active/passive sonar homing to intercept submarines or surface ships. Upon target detection, it detonates via proximity or contact to maximize hull damage.
